OCAF’s 21st annual Pottery Perspectives starts Aug. 25

Jul 12, 2023

Forty-seven of the top potters from across Georgia will display their work during Pottery Perspectives, a huge exhibition and sale in the Oconee Cultural Art Foundation’s 1902 building from Aug. 25 through Sept. 10.

OCAF will host a preview sale Friday, Aug. 25, from 5-8 p.m. The cost is $20 per person and is open to members and non-members. During this event, shoppers will have the first opportunity to make their purchases before the sale is open to the public.

After that, the cost is free and hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Pottery Perspectives has lured collectors, art patrons and thousands of others who simply love beautiful functional pottery for more than two decades. Upward of 8,000 pieces of pottery created by some of the most gifted ceramic artists in Georgia will be for sale.

As a special treat for this year’s visitors, pieces from the private collection of Bob Marable will also be available for purchase.

On view in the Hall Gallery will be “Sandy Culp: Sculptural Journey in Clay.” Sandy’s “forte is trompe l’oeil, and she finds it exhilarating to create a sculpture that not only “fools the eyes” but is also surprisingly functional.

She said she prides herself on her and attention to detail “that transforms into intentionally stylized and/or extreme realism depending on my desired effect.”

On Saturday, Aug. 25 and Sunday, Aug. 26, well-known Georgia potter Martha Cook will be demonstrating both wheel and hand building techniques. During this two-day workshop, she will demonstrate mugs, bowls, vases, pitchers and baking dishes, as well as decorating techniques like sgraffito, slip, wax resist and stamps.

The workshop is $175 for OCAF members, and $200 for non-members. Visit ocaf.com to register, as space is limited.

Kathy Chappelle and her late husband, Jerry, will be honored during a private reception at this year’s event for their steadfast commitment and vast contributions to the art landscape in northeast Georgia. The Chappelles were among the original founders of OCAF and were mainstays of Pottery Perspectives.

Volunteers are needed for the event, and volunteers who work at least 10 hours will receive a discount on the items at the end of the exhibition.
